EA fumbles the releases of Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1
The fumble cost a severe loss in revenue for the company, as they’re competing against Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
We’ve seen it happen countless times before throughout the entertainment industry. The gaming, movie, and television industries have frequently misstepped and fumbled their releases atop one another. Titanfall 2 has proven thus far to be an unfortunate addition to this list.
Analysts have been warning EA since the announcement of Titanfall 2’s release date, that the choice of October 28th would result in a poor return of profits. At the time, EA remained confident that the player base of Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 would not split the divide of sales. While the title itself has received high scores of 85% + according to Metacritic, Titanfall 2 sales during its first week, only reached 25% of the launch week sales of the original game. While EA has remained steadfast in its prediction of 9 to 10 million units during its first year of release, financial analysts at Cowen Group, now expect the title to only reach in the neighbourhood of 5 to 6 million units in the same time frame. Luckily for EA, Battlefield 1 appears to be carrying the banner forward.
Despite the positive reviews and critical acclaim received by the title thus far, its sales continue to suffer due to a failed release window.
Have any of your favourite video games, movies, or TV shows suffered due to poor release dates? Anything you wish would have held out that extra week so that it would stand out in the crowd rather than suffering in the shadows of other titles?
